One of the biggest challenges in almost all industries today is achieving gender parity. Gender diversity provides huge benefits in the wo rkplace. pWhile some industries have made significant advancements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter category. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stereotype is rooted in reality. When was the last time you actually spotted a woman on a construction site? Or hired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 million construction employees are women.pBut the construction industry has a lot more to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the industry in this era of rapid change. Here are 5 reasons why women joining the workforce or looking to make a pivot should consider a career in construction.h21. Fuel Innovation/h2pNot only is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent business strategy. pResearch presented in the Harvard Business Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is further supported by a study conducted by Gallupon the wertzuwachs of gender-diverse teams versus single-gender teams, which found that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives led to better business performance and problem-solving. h22. Capitalize on Demand/h2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries, with total spending projected to exceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to the Associated General Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are experiencing diff iculties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportunities/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 million managerial positions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in leadership roles would help drive innovation and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive option for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, making a construction career a prime choice for women looking for a high-paying job,pThe 2018 Const ruction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the National Center for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of combo welders ($71,067), instrumentation technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line workers ($68,262) and industrial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.

How to Meet Influencers - The Muse

How to Meet Influencers - The MuseHow to Meet Influencers If youre anything like me, you get pretty jealous when you hear about a friend or colleague who has managed to build a relationship with a well-known influencer. Its easy to think, Gee, Im smart and motivated too. Why cant I have that kind of relationship with an important rolle? And sure, the reality is that there are certain people in your field that youll have to get really lucky just to be around, let alone network with. But there are also some really interesting and knowledgeable people who dont have millions of followers, and a book, and a verified check mark on Twitter who you can get to know, too. Youll just need to think a bit outside the box to get a foot in the door. Here are a few tips to help you do just that. 1. Rethink Your Definition of an Important PersonOK, so you could make the decision that you want to meet important people in your field, but only if they have all the influence. And thats fine, but it would be unfair to say that these people are the only significant people you could meet. Instead of focusing only on these power players, reconsider your definition of what this person looks like. Is she influential in your field? Do you respect his opinions on some really important matters? Do you want to learn from her experience? Think about the types of questions that are important to you, and youll quickly realize that a persons social media following doesnt determine his or her importance alone. 2. Find Out Where They Hang Out Online- and EngageI know what youre thinking, and yes- not getting a response from someone on any of these platforms hurts, even if you knew the odds were low. But, the truth is that even if someone very important and influential doesnt have one million Twitter followers, odds are that he or she wont just publicly post a home phone number for interested networkers either. Its up to you to go to where they are and do your best to start the conversation. While it would be easy to assume that important people will simply ignore you, this is absolutely not always true. In fact, even some of those leaders with large followings can be pretty responsive on social media, so take a leap and strike up a conversation. 3. Ask for an Informational Coffee MeetingAfter a while of engaging with important people online, it would be easy to say, Hey, I did it This person knows I exist Time to celebrate And yes, that wouldnt be unreasonable. But, if youve built a relationship with someone who also happens to live in the same city, its perfectly OK to take another leap and ask for some time to pick his or her brain. In person. Over coffee, which you should pay for, even if this person makes a lot more money than you. As scary as that might sound, remember that youve taken the time to get to know him or her online- and in all likelihood, he or shes used to getting this kind of request anyway. So, its not like youll shock him or her into silence. Its easy to see the benefits of getting to know important people. Obviously they have some knowledge to impart on you, and could even open up some interesting career opportunities. But, if youre typically scared of pursuing these relationships like I am, that might sound ridiculous. However, the worst case scenario? That person says no. But, if youre respectful in the way you pursue the opportunities to meet some influential folks, theres no harm in at least making the effort. And youll likely be pleasantly surprised by the outcome more than once. Photo of man on computer courtesy of Shutterstock.

Facing a Layoff 7 Tips to Prepare for the Job Search Ahead

Facing a Layoff 7 Tips to Prepare for the Job Search Ahead Facing a Layoff 7 Tips to Prepare for the Job Search Ahead If layoffs are on the horizon, take the necessary steps to operate at your best and prepare for the worst. If you’re concerned that layoffs may be in your company’s future, it’s in your best interest to prepare for the job search ahead of time â€" not after you’ve received the pink slip and you’re suddenly in a panic mode.Kick it up a notch. When layoffs are on the horizon, it can be difficult to feel positive or motivated in the workplace. However, this is exactly when you need to shine! Take a deep breath each morning and mentally prepare for the day. I don’t believe in “face time,” but I think it’s important to not cut corners. Show up on time and stay until you’ve handled the work that needs to be done. Consider postponing your vacation, if you had one planned. If you’ve been putting off certain tasks or projects, revisit them and add the important ones back on to your to-do list. Don’t give management a reason to put you on the pink slip list.Get noticed fo r the right reasons. Now is the time to ramp up your personal brand strategy. Take initiative and find opportunities to market your value. Volunteer to present to other groups in the company and actively participate in department or companywide meetings when you can add value. Also, take credit for your achievements. While it’s important to be a team player, don’t be afraid to let others know how you played a role in the company’s success.Continue developing your expertise. Seek out professional development opportunities in the form of webinars, networking events, online group discussions and so forth that are focused on your line of work and specialty. You want to remain on the cutting edge of your field. Not only will this elevate your brand, should you need to find another job, but you’ll also be able to bring this knowledge back to your organization, which makes you even more valuable. It’s hard to lay off someone who’s considered the “go-to” person in your indust ry or line of work.Update your resume.Edit your resume to include your most recent work and accomplishments, and is positioned to support your current career goals. You probably shouldn’t post it on websites yet, but you want to have it ready to go at a moment’s notice. Consider a professional resume rewrite to bolster your efforts.Clean up your online presence.Make sure your personal profiles (like Facebook) are secure so recruiters (and frankly your current manager) can’t see them. I recommend changing your name to “FirstName MiddleName” or something to that effect to keep your personal profiles private.Identify which social media channels you want to use for your job search and make sure they are current and in alignment with your resume and career goals. If you’re planning to update your profile on LinkedIn, first change your account settings so the changes you make won’t show up in your activity feed (this will prevent any red flags getting raised at your current employment).Build (or reconnect) with your network. If you haven’t been in touch with your contacts lately, now’s the time to reach out and catch up over coffee. This helps you from feeling like you’re asking for a job â€" you’re not, you’re just reconnecting with those who were once a bigger part of your social or professional life. That way, should you want to conduct an informational interview with them in the future, your request will not be coming out of left field.Check out the prospects.Go to websites such as Ladders, LinkedIn or Indeed to see what opportunities are currently available. If you’ve worked with recruiters in the past that have been helpful, this is be a good time to reach out to them to see if they have any open positions that would be a good fit.As a rule of thumb, don’t do any of your job-search activities in the office or on company equipment. Don’t post your company phone number or email address for your contact information on your resume or p ublic profiles. It’s essential to prepare for a potential job search without jeopardizing your current position â€" especially during a time when your employer may be looking for a reason to let people go!Follow the steps mentioned above to help you take control of your destiny and prepare for whatever may come your way.

The Meaning and History of the Thin Blue Line

The Meaning and History of the Thin Blue Line The Meaning and History of the Thin Blue Line Youve probably seen the symbol- a solid blue horizontal line or bar bordered on the top and bottom by black rectangles: the thin blue line. These emblems can be spotted on the front license plates of cars and trucks, and they appear as stickers on rear windows, on T-shirts, websites, profile pictures, and even tattoos. But what does the thin blue line emblem mean? For some civilians, it connotes a show of support for the police, acknowledging the role these individuals dedicate themselves to in society. It represents the solidarity and brotherhood that police officers share as fellow professionals for others. The Emblem This simple-looking emblem has multiple meanings, all arising from the same concept: police officers stand as a thin line that protects society from evil and chaos. But depending on who you talk to and which police department you ask, some additional meanings apply to the thin blue line. The Hamden Police Department in Connecticut believes that it represents the line between life and death that officers face every day. In some cases, it can be a tribute to an officer killed in the line of duty. The blue is derived from the traditional color of police uniforms. Most municipal police still wear blue, and the color has long been associated with law enforcement throughout the history of modern policing. The black simply serves as a stark contrast for the blue. The color itself is neutral, and it emphasizes the blue line. The History  of the Thin Blue Line The term thin blue line is said to be derived from the thin red line, and this dates all the way back to 1854. The thin red line was a battle formation assumed by the 93rd Highland Regiment of the British Army against the Russian cavalry at the Battle of Balaclava. Fast forward 57 years and the thin red line came to America...at least in poetry. Nels Dickmann Anderson wrote The Thin Blue Line in 1911, tweaking the color to blue, but he didnt associate it with police officers. It referred to U.S. Army in the poem. They wore blue uniforms at that time. The modern concept of the thin blue line and its association with police officers is said to trace back to 1966. It was introduced in a documentary that explored the cultural brotherhood of policing. Its come under attack innumerable times since then, first during the time of tumultuous civil unrest in the 1960s. This was a time when police were called pigs, and police brutality was an accepted circumstance. This feeling carried forward into the 1970s.   A documentary film titled The Thin Blue Line, directed by Errol Morris, was then released in 1988 to critical acclaim. It was about the murder of a Dallas police officer and the term thin blue line was used by the prosecuting attorney at the trial in the depicted closing argument. The Thin Blue Line in the Millennium Officers have recently been charged with taking the concept of the thin blue line brotherhood too far, extending professional courtesies to other law enforcement brothers, particularly for minor offenses. The charge is that the emblem on the bumper of a personal vehicle effectively says, Im one of you. Look the other way. Such theories have led some to criticize- and to misunderstand- what the solidarity of the thin blue line really means.   Police officers and departments have suffered harsh criticism in the millennium as well, and the concept of the thin blue line has been repeatedly drawn into political and social frays. Counter-protesters carried thin blue line flags in November 2016 in Chicago when others gathered to protest the police shooting of Joshua Beal. Then, not even a year later, the thin blue line flag was seized upon by white nationalist groups at the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia in August 2017. In both cases, the flags were intended to support the police, but they were also taken- many say inappropriately- to be a show of resistance to the Black Lives Matter movement in Charlottesville. Standing Together for the Good of All Police, like any other profession, have an understanding among each other for what  they do and what they go through on a daily basis. If anything, the thin blue line demonstrates support for each another in a tough job. Its not an excuse to violate the high ethical standards that officers are held to, but rather an encouragement to stand on that line together in service of others.

8 Ways to Confront Long-Term Unemployment

8 Ways to Confront Long-Term Unemployment 8 Ways to Confront Long-Term Unemployment Have you, or someone you know, been out of work for more than six months? That’s the demarcation line between short and long-term unemployment, and once you cross that mark, things change. People describe themselves as having entered a black hole, according to Ofer Sharone, assistant professor with  MIT Sloan School of Management. He recently organized and led a conference, “The Crisis of Long-Term Unemployment,” for approximately 250 leaders in academia, government, nonprofit support organizations  and other employment-related professionals. “For the long-term unemployed, they feel there is something wrong and [think], ‘I don’t know how to fix it,’” says Matt Casey, a conference attendee and  career coach based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Statistics point to the fact that about one-third of today’s 9.8 million unemployed Americans find themselves in the category of long-term unemployed. Speaker after speaker dealt with systemic economic issues and the need to create more and better jobs. Eric M. Seleznow, acting assistant secretary of the U.S. Department of Labor's Employment and Training Administration, put it this way in his keynote speech: “We need a sense of urgency for this particular problem.” Beyond the academic study of employment issues and trends and governmental policy advocacy, a number of key things were identified as helping individuals caught up in this national crisis: 1. Counseling and/or therapy. Being out of work for months depletes anyone’s emotional reserves and self-esteem. Spousal/partner and other family relationships can suffer. Depression is commonplace, and can itself become a barrier to putting in the effort toward an effective job search. Moreover, situation-based depression can obliterate an individual’s ability to project the necessary and positive can-do persona to networking partners or potential employers. Tip: Recognize signs of depression, anxiety or other mental health issues in yourself and those you love and care for. Counseling or therapy from a trained professional, often accompanied by medications, can be of tremendous support and benefit in breaking self-defeating mental thought patterns. 2. Peer groups. There is a range of networking and support groups run by and for job hunters. You can find them in public libraries, houses of worship and other venues. Their benefit can be multifold: the value in just having a place to go each week coupled with the accountability one takes on to demonstrate to others what you are doing week by week to advance your cause. Needs and leads are shared, along with the perspective that you are not going through this difficult period alone. These groups provide support from others who are experiencing the same difficulties, and afford a venue to hone one’s ability to speak about his or  her strengths, accomplishments and capacity to add value to his or her next employer. 3. CareerOneStop. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor, this website is  an excellent venue for  exploring career options, learning about educational and training  opportunities,  résumé  building,  accessing state job banks and much more. 4. Coaching. Studies show substantive practical returns for one-to-one focused coaching in the areas of  résumé  and  LinkedIn profile development, networking, interview preparation, etc. Job coaches can convey knowledge of the latest trends, and provide support and perspective throughout a job hunt. 5. Networking. Far more jobs are obtained because the job seeker knows someone on the inside who goes to bat for him or her than any other method. The insider doesn’t have to be a relative or a long-term friend. It might be that person you meet at an alumni event, a professional meeting, an informational interview or standing on the sidelines of your child’s soccer match. Networking is about building relationships, not asking for favors. It takes effort, whether in-person or online through LinkedIn and other social media sites. Regardless, it is of critical importance for an unemployed individual not to remain hidden at home, burdened by a sense of isolation, fear or shame. 6. Skill building. Research has demonstrated that one of the biggest fears employers have of hiring someone who has been out of work for more than six months is that they have not kept up with developments in their field, and built or nurtured the skills associated with the latest and greatest. By taking courses, gaining certifications or doing individual projects that can be shared online, one can demonstrate both initiative and that he or she  continues to be up-to-date. 7. Midternships. Operation A.B.L.E. of Greater Boston is a nonprofit that focuses on helping workers age 45 and older get back to work through a variety of means, but among their strategies is to encourage people to engage in midternships, or an internship for people midcareer. One of the nonprofit's brochures suggests that this “gives you an opportunity to prove to an organization that you have the skills to do the job and lets the company try you out with no long term commitment. They are generally unpaid and, therefore, limited to one month.” 8. Volunteering. Donating your time and skills while unemployed  is an excellent way to maintain ties to your community and support a cause that resonates with you. Often people can gain added skills and experience that are transferrable to new employment opportunities. And, of course, it is also commonplace for people to actually be hired by the nonprofit at which they’ve demonstrated their talent and enthusiasm. Above all, it is important to maintain one’s hope coupled with daily and weekly efforts to break the cycle of search and rejection. Happy hunting!Arnie Fertig, MPA, is passionate about helping his  Jobhuntercoach  clients advance their careers by transforming frantic “I’ll apply to anything” searches into focused hunts for “great fit” opportunities. He brings to each client the extensive knowledge he gained when working in HR staffing and managing his boutique recruiting firm.

How to Use Personal Business Cards

How to Use Personal Business Cards How to Use Personal Business Cards Innovation and advancement in the technological age have certainly managed to replace a variety of tools we previously considered useful.  Car phones are bygone relics that serve only to date cheesy 80’s movies.  Typewriters may be romantic decorations for a home office, but they rarely see any actual use when laptop computers are faster and more efficient. Even AOL Instant Messenger is now facing its final days. There are a few classics, however, that simply can’t be replaced.  While social media, sharing of cell phone and email numbers and professional networking sites are great ways to share contact information, none of these have managed to prove as ubiquitous in their usage as the personal business card.  Having originated in Victorian times, perhaps it’s more sentimentality than actual efficiency that has managed to keep these antiquated cardboard slips in play.  Whatever the case, personal business cards are a useful tool in your job search arsenal.  Here we discuss how to use business cards to land a job, network and more. What’s in a Card? First thing’s first: in order to use a personal business card you must have a personal business card and preferably one that’s professional and noteworthy.  While the 3 by 2-inch dimensions don’t leave a heck of a lot of room for an in-depth resume, including your name, email, phone number and the basic professional information is definitely a must.   Unlike business cards issued by an employer, think beyond a traditional title below your name.  This noteworthy space on your business card should include a brief description of your relevant skills that helps paint a picture of your qualifications and career goals.  Whether currently employed, in the middle of a job search or working as an independent contractor, a short sentence beneath your name that describes your current or desired level will help sell your skills. Consider these examples for maximum personal business card efficacy: Experienced writer with a knack for humor Professional architect featuring years of portfolio experience Financial planner with proven growth track record Highly motivated entry-level professional Stand Out from the Crowd While the typical business card can be a bit, well, forgettable, personal business cards are under no such constraints.  Business cards for realtors typically include a small headshot on the face or in one of the corners.  Including this is a handy way to help someone you’ve met personally put a face to a name when they inevitably come across your contact card after a meeting or event. If you’re in a field that embraces creativity, use that fact to your advantage and make your business cards stand out from the crowd.  Artists should consider including one or more of their images as their personal business card background.  Inventive (but readable) fonts and colors are also great ways to ensure your contact info isn’t lost in a sea of white and pale grey cards from your peers.  The inclusion of a meaningful and appropriate personal motto or saying is also a great way to help your card get noticed.  Although the exact layout and ability to include extras will vary based on your profession, getting noticed in a tasteful and appropriate manner on your personal business card is a great way to help your networking and job-seeking chances. When and Where to Use Once your substance and design are set, it’s time to get to handing out those personal business cards.  Get into the habit of carrying several cards on you at all times.  You never know when you will run into someone who may have the ability to help boost your career.  If you will be attending a networking event or other function where you are likely to run into a large number of people, be sure to pad that number and carry a few extra cards to give away.   It can be offputting to lead with a business card when you first meet someone, not to mention you’ll probably end up wasting a good deal of trees as a high percentage of your personal missives will most likely end up in the trash.  Instead, reserve personal business cards for the end of a conversation when there is a clear case for exchanging contact information or an invitation to keep in touch.  Cards handed out at this point will be much more useful, meaningful and will get a bigger impact in the memorability department. Remember that personal business cards aren’t a substitute for good networking skills, follow up with industry peers or a well-developed resume and professional networking profile.  Think of your cards as another tool in your arsenal for maintaining an active job hunt.  After all, there’s a reason these tiny slips of paper have managed to outlive petticoats, tricorn hats, powdered wigs and other Victorian-era fads.  Although, we wouldn’t mind seeing a comeback of those fancy buckle shoes in the workplace.

Why these companies decided to go on vacation together

Why these companies decided to go on vacation together Why these companies decided to go on vacation together There’s no way around it: You definitely spend more time with your colleagues than you do with any other community in your life. Considering the average worker logs in 40+ hours a week, it’s no surprise so many friendships are formed between cubicles and over super-long client briefs. But what if in addition to sharing your space, mind, and lunch with your coworkers, you also went on vacation with them?As work becomes continuously redefined and more and more professionals prioritize experiences and adventures, some companies are using the benefits of travel to reward and inspire their employees. In addition to endless vacation policies, the ability to work remotely or structure your own hours, some businesses are aiming to give their hard-workers the opportunity to see the world - on the company dime. These three companies use corporate-wide vacations - from Aruba and Miami to upstate New York and beyond - to bring together teams, raise morale and brainstorm areas for growth. H ere, they share why it’s an effective practice (that, um, you should totally pitch to your boss!):“It helps boost morale - and connect teams.”The owner and managing partner of In Good Company Hospitality Terence Tubridy came up with the idea of not only getting out of the office but out of town during a time when his team really needed it. After working tirelessly to bring the iconic Employees Only to Miami, he decided to treat everyone to a few days at the South Beach Wine Food Festival. But once the getaway commenced and he witnessed first-hand how great of an impact it had on the morale of his employees. Not only did it provide a different way of experiencing everyone’s personalities outside of their work, but it gave them a space to celebrate and bond.“I think it made us a stronger team and company moving forward. It is amazing what can happen when you take the finance team and the reservations team and give them some sunshine and rosé,” he shared. This summer, they have a few summer field trips to the Rockaways and they’re planning more overnights in the future. He would recommend traveling to any company that aims to build cross-functional teams, connect staff, and recharge creativity.“Vacationing should be part of the work experience.”Especially considering her company - Diamond Public Relations - specializes in the travel, tourism and hospitality industry, it makes sense that founder Jody Diamond would make getaways part of the company culture.“We ‘sell’ the travel experience to media and the consumer alike, and I believe our team should have as many travel experiences as they can fit into their lives, be it personal or as a part of their professional lives,” she explains.Though many of her team members will travel with media to Mexico, Italy, Peru, Palm Beach and other destinations, they have few opportunities to take a trip together. That’s why in the duration of her 11-year-old company, she’s prioritized taking her t eam near and far. So far, they’ve ventured to Cancun, Vegas (complete with a Britney Spears concert and most recently, Aruba to celebrate their 10-year anniversary.“Our entire crew of 30 descended on this Caribbean paradise for a long weekend of catamaran sails, private dinners, including a very special one the actual night of our business anniversary, beach time and UTVs,” she shares.Though she’s still on the fence for this year, she’s been toying with an executive retreat to Italy, among other ideas. Depending on your cash flow and how much you’re able to allocate to this personal expense, Diamond says it is worth the investment.“It broadens your team’s knowledge of the world, their experiences and their bond with each other, which I believe can be beneficial if you have the right team members who can appreciate this company perk, value it and understand very few companies do this,” she says.“Life experiences should never be delayed.”Charles Teague, the CEO o f Lose IT!, a weight loss and wellness company, didn’t want his employees to delay life experiences because they were too busy working. Considering so much can be missed out on if you’re continuously grinding away without leaving the office or your desk, Teague decided to host an international retreat to give his employees the opportunity to cross items off their bucket list, on the company dime.Their first getaway was to Loon Mountain in New Hampshire, and later this year in July, they’re encouraging and paying for not only employees but their families to visit Paris.“We think that providing a trip like this to employees and their families will help create diversity and creativity in how our employees work, deepen relationships between employees and encourage additional independence and autonomy in our work environment,” he shared. In addition to the mental recharge these vacations provide, Teague says it also proves to be an effective measure of stimulating growth, imagin ation and team spirit.“When the whole company is brought to a new location, we find that ideas are shared and relationships are built in different ways than what happens in the comfort zone of our office. I expect this to be the case on our international trip and hope we can continue this program each year in a new city,” he adds.
